He got a letter from a Terror that told him to come to the pens. Something about getting a dragon. Nikulas wasn't as excited as he should be he thought that the letter was more on the lines of 'getting a dragon to wash' or something like that. He got Mimi, the Terror curling around his neck and shivering at anything that moved. yes, Mimi reminded Nikulas about his younger brother. A little too much, but either was. He scratched the dragon's head softly and started towards the pens, not walking too fast or too slow. Right at that perfect pace for him. It wasn't long before he arrived, looking around nervously. Now what was he really doing here? Was he supposed to be near the dragon pens? Mimi was shivering like crazy, giving a whine as he eyed everything like it could murder him. Nikulas rubbed the dragon's head and leaned against a wall, waiting patiently for anyone with some sort of power to show up, and hopefully not his father. Anyone but him. It wasn't that Nikulas was embarrassed of his father he just didn't want to talk to him right now and have the man give Mimi a heart attack with his dragons. His father wasn't the most careful with Mimi, Nikulas learned that the hard way when the poor dragon fainted when his father's Whispering Death tried to cuddle with it. Poor Mimi. Either way, the dragon was starting to calm down, which just put Nikulas in a better mood.

Raphael wasn't amused that the staff was shorthanded. Okay, okay, so dragon taming had a few occupational hazards, but it didn't mean that they should be running him ragged. He'd done his time, he deserved a break, right? But apparently not. At least this particular job was something that was actually under his jurisdiction- helping someone find a dragon that they could work with. He knew dragons, their personalities- and sure, he wasn't a people person, but dragons weren't stupid. They could do all the judging of character for themselves. All he really had to do was serve as a translator, and so he was actually in a decent mood as he approached the dragon pens, his two Terrors clinging to his shoulders and Saggezza trailing along behind them. He slowed a bit as he rounded the corner toward the gates- and hey, there was actually someone there, on time. Thank Thor. He probably shouldn't be surprised, Mirun's son and all, but he still had the time to be relieved. He gave a genuine, albeit small, smile and a small wave as he approached the student. "Nikulas, right? C-congratulations on advancing." He came to stand in front of the other and offered his hand. "I'm Raphael, I'll be helping you meet your p-partner." He moved on after a moment, working on opening the various latches and buckles to get into the pens. He spoke to the other as he worked, partly to pass the time and part because it was indeed actually necessary. "Ssso? Talk to me. What did you have in mind? Species, personality?" Was he usually this talkative? No, but this was important. They'd be partners for life, after all, he had to have the information to make a good match. And no matter how shy he was, he could talk about dragons all day long. Now to hope that this student actually had some clue as to what he was doing.

Mimi whined when someone with a big, scary dragon was approaching, which awakened Nikulas's brotherly instinct. He held the Terror in his arms and shushed him softly, like he did with Volund sometimes, and smiled at the teacher. Ah, yeah, his father told him about this one. He gave a rare smile and shook the professor's hand. "Yes, sir, I am. And thank you." He was going to say more, but was too busy trying to get Mimi onto his shoulder so he could shove his hands in his pockets. Oh, so this was why he was here! He was getting his own partner! He looked at the Nightmare that came with Raphael and studied it, huh. That must be one tough dragon to belong to one of the Master teachers of the school, plus a Keeper. Nikulas leaned back on his heels at the question and hummed. "I don't really know, sir," he said "A Nadder seems interesting, but so does a Zippleback, with their double heads and their potential. But Thunderdrums are also rather deadly and would be a challenge, I think." He was trying to go by what he read in some of his books, but he honestly didn't know. "In all honesty, sir, what ever you think will be best. I trust you more than myself." It was rare that he ever said such a thing but it was true. He didn't think he would make the right choice. "Ah, but Mimi here has to agree. Poor boy is scared of everything. I want him to be comfortable with the choice as well." That much had to happen. Mimi was very important to Nikulas.

It didn't go unnoticed how Nik comforted his Terror as the creature cowered in fear. Raphael couldn't describe just how relieved he was- he raised most Terrors that students received, and he'd admit that he'd been worried about that one. He wouldn't have given the shy dragon away at all, had he not been too busy to give the creature the time and attention it deserved. He hummed his approval at the student's request to have his Terror approve, so pleased he very well near purred. He had to admit he'd been the slightest bit nervous, though he knew now there was no reason to be. This kid was nothing like the psychotic Mirun! Er, don't tell the breeder he said (well, thought) that. He supposed the kid must have at least heard about him from his father, though, if that blush-inducing praise was anything to go by. "Ah, thanksss. I'm not the one who's going to have to live with the c-consequences, though, ssso..." He finished opening up the gates and gave the solid wooden door a nice, hard heave, letting it swing open with a rather satisfying creaking noise. He paused rather than enter, though, watching the student contemplatively. "Hmm. Well. I think a Nadder might be a bit much for him. They're all different, of course, but they can be rather... ah, needy." He ran through a quick inventory of their current dragons in his head, trying to find someone who might be at least slightly compatible. "A Zippleback might be a little overwhelming for him at first, but at least they tend to be a bit calmer. You should at least meet a Thunderdrum, though, we have one or two that aren't too terribly loud... Ah, give me a minute?"
He beckoned to the student, invited him in toward the central pen where he would meet his choices, before scurrying off toward the areas for individual dragons, Saggezza in tow. The tamer returned several minutes later, his Nightmare herding a group of three dragons before him. Raphael bade them all stop at the edge of the pen, not wanting to frighten the young Terror more than necessary, though he was forced to raise his voice a bit to be heard. "I grabbed one from each species that I thought might work. Which would you like to meet first?"

Nikulas listened intently, paying attention while he took his hands out of pockets to comfort Mimi, the dragon having clung to his chest to be held. The Terror was Nikulas's first priority at the moment, and was intent to let the little dragon make the choice. Given that might take a while since big dragons were not his thing. He rubbed the scaly back and followed Raphael, watching him go. Mimi was shaking more, and it seemed no amount of petting was working. Yeah, it was like having another brother around, really. Nikulas payed attention to what was said, of course, knowing that Raphael was right. Yet he couldn't really be a good breeder without a big dragon now could he? He hoped something would be protective like he was, so Mimi could feel save, or at least big enough and kind enough so the tiny Terror didn't flee or run away. That would be horrible. Nikulas waited and watched the starters appear, nodding a bit. He looked down at Mimi and spoke softly to him, saying dragon species to the little Terror and pointing at them when he did so so Mimi would understand. Mimi shook his head on every one of them except for the Nightmare. "I suppose we'll be seeing the Nightmare first." Mimi cowered close to Nikulas's chest, giving a terrified whine. There were a lot of big dragons in here.

Nightmare, hmm? Seemed strange to start with one that he wasn't big on, but oh well. Nightmares were rather scary, though he supposed they were closest in biology to a Terror, so maybe that would scare Mimi less...? Eh, no matter how the decision had been made, the Tamer would stick with it. He spoke quietly to Saggezza for a few moments, hoping to keep the other dragons back at a safe distance- they'd probably obey, they were all quieter dragons anyway- and led the Nightmare forward, murmuring to it quietly in an attempt to keep it from making any sudden movements. Not that it worked very well- halfway across the arena the dragon made a break for it, picking up speed in its eagerness to meet the young breeder. "H-hey, wait!" Raphael took off after it, lavishing rubs and scratches under the dragon's chin until it was collapsed in a purring pile at his feet. He turned to look at Nik and his Terror, somewhat alarmed. "Sorry! He's just... ah, eager." He scratched the back of his head awkwardly, casting several glances between the Nightmare and the student. "He's a little on the energetic side for you, m-maybe. Really loyal and protective though. Thought that... m-might be n-nice? Aww, he liked this kid, he really didn't want to mess up. Lady, sensing her human's concern, took to chattering at the Nightmare scoldingly, complete with little angry hand motions with her front paw. The teacher shushed her, blushing a little, before turning back toward the student. "So, um, worth looking into...? Or...?" Ahh, not a great start.
[attr="class","box"] [attr="class","textholder"] Monstrous Nightmare ♂
Coloration The average dark red and orange with a lighter underbelly, though his horns, claws, and the spot patterns along his wings are all the same pale cream.
Temperament This boy is a large, overeager puppydog- a huge puppydog with claws and fangs that can set himself on fire, that is. Though he's a good ally in a fight and would give his all to protect those he loves, when he isn't provoked he's a gentle soul. He can be a tad overwhelming with his need to lavish affection on his trainers, but his heart is definitely in the right place.
Likes ✦ Making new friends ✦ His friends being happy ✦ Being helpful ✦ Tackle hugs ✦ Beating up meanies
Dislikes ✧ His friends being sad ✧ Being left alone ✧ Being clumsy (which he is) ✧ People being afraid of him ✧ Being forced to beat up meanies

He waited patiently, and watching in interest as the Nightmare approached. Of course that interest soon turned to worry as he felt Mimi shivering against him at the charging beast. Nikulas covered Mimi's eyes quickly and held him closer to his body, as if he was protecting him. It helped the Terror to calm down a bit, long enough to Nikulas to step a little closer before covering the Terror's eyes. Funny how something called a Terrible Terror was terrified of everything. He rather liked the Nightmare, himself, but Mimi was the one he was worried about. A loyal dragon with this much enthusiasm would make training it a little easier, since it seemed to want attention. Besides, such a loving dragon would be good for Mimi, but he didn't want to make a choice too quickly himself. Mimi needed to see the others too. Judge them all equally. He let Mimi sniff the dragon, kneeling down so the Terror could get a better view in the safety of his arms. Mimi gave a small whine. The dragon was big but smelled nice and seemed to mean well, but still. He whined again and clung to Nikulas's chest, peering at the dragon from over his shoulder. "I personally like him," Nikulas said, petting Mimi, "Mimi seems to like him, too, but still rather scared. Then again, he isn't comfortable around big dragons anyway." He spoke to Mimi again, pointing to the others. The Terror nodded at the Zippleback and clung tighter to Nikulas. It was his only comfort. "May we see the Zippleback next, please?" He didn't want to act demanding or take up too much time, so he would try to finish this up quickly. Hopefully Mimi would make a choice.

Raphael winced as Mimi cowered- he knew this Nightmare could be a bit much but he'd hoped they'd get along a little better than that. Fortunately, some help from his trainer helped the Terror to calm down some. He fidgeted a little in place, watching the student warily, and gave an audible sigh of relief at the boy's reaction. "It'sss good of you to recognize that," he nodded, approving. There wasn't going to be a dragon that Mimi instantly trusted, of course; this boy had realistic expectations, the tamer liked that. He'd always been rather font of Torrents, too bad he'd been lumped in with Mystery back in the day. "So we won't put him away, then, hmm? Let'sss meet the next one- er, onesss?" He beckoned the Nightmare back and the dragon came reluctantly, to be replaced by a blue Zipplehead. The two-headed dragon approached a bit more tactfully, seeming to sense the Terror's fear and being careful to move slowly as they sniffed at Nik tentatively. "They might not provide the sssame protection, but these two girls are sweet as can be." They crooned to the Terror softly, almost as if to prove his point, pressing close in the hopes of a nuzzle. Hopefully the two heads wouldn't be too much for Mimi to handle.
[attr="class","box"] [attr="class","textholder"] Hideous Zippleback ♀
Coloration Pale blue around her body, fading to silvery white on her underbelly, with navy blue spikes and patterns.
Temperament These girls are sweet, but a little on the shy side themselves. They can be intimidated by other dragons, though for those who earn their trust they can be somewhat of a mother hen. They'll absolutely dote on anyone who earns their trust, though they can be a little smothering due to their ability to be two places at once. But despite their silliness they're cool, capable, intelligent dragons (er, dragon?).
Likes ✦ Taking care of little ones ✦ Being safe ✦ People getting along ✦ Warm, sunny days ✦ Playing

Nikulas watched the Nightmare leave, feeling a little empty on the inside. He really did like that one and how joyful and puppy like it seemed. But Mimi was the one he was mostly worried about. He couldn't live with himself if the poor doll was scared of something. He loved him as much as he loved his little brother Volund. That's why he chose him. Their resemblance was so uncanny. So he knew if Mimi was comfortable with a dragon, then he wouldn't have to worry about his darling little brother. He stroked Mimi's head softly, watching the next choice come. He appreciated their carefulness near Mimi. The Terror reached his head out, sniffing at them and nuzzling one head before nuzzling the other. He was shaking like a leaf though, scared he did it in the wrong order. Nikulas gave the Terror his full attention as he watched the dragon's eyes. He couldn't tell what he was thinking but he could tell he liked these two. Nikulas was worried that they wouldn't be able to protect them both as well as the Nightmare, but their personality seemed beneficial to Mimi. "I enjoy them, not as much as the Nightmare, personally, but Mimi seems calmer with them. I'm worried, though, in the event that an stronger dragon attacks, and if they can protect both themselves and Mimi. I don't want anyone seriously hurt." He looked at Mimi again and noticed the little Terror pointing a claw at the Thunderdrum. "I am so sorry for taking your time, professor, but may we see the Thunderdrum?" Mimi got what Mimi wanted. Especially since he wasn't spoiled.

That went considerably better, at least on Mimi's part, though it was clear to Raphael that the gentle Zippleback didn't have quite the same call to the breeder. He could understand the concern- it was a problem he'd run into with his own Snaptrapper, back when he was out in the field, which seemed ages ago now. Shy dragons were miracle workers when working with dragons in the pens, but when push came to shove they just didn't have the same danger protection. "I underssstand. Might make a nice second dragon though, drop by and say hi sssome day. You're going to be a breeder, right, you'll come visit?" He felt sort of bad as he beckoned the Zippleback back to the group, though the sweet things seemed to take it in stride. He gave them an extra scratch and a promise to bring some salmon later, anyway, before laughing quietly at Nik's concern. "No no, don't worry about it, I'd much rather be here than teaching freshmen. And don't call me professssor, you're making me feel old." He managed to keep from blushing, though, which was improvement, he supposed. He really did like this boy, he was so level-headed compared to, well, everyone. "I want you to find a good match! And besides, he might be worth it." The Thunderdrum gave him a somewhat cautious look, but went forward easily enough at Raphael's encouragement. The big dragon waddle forward calmly enough, stopping just before Nik and waiting politely to avoid making the Terror nervous.
[attr="class","box"] [attr="class","textholder"] Thunderdrum ♂
Coloration Deep navy blue, almost black, across his body, with a pale underbelly and light silver speckles across his back.
Temperament This boy is a little older and more mature, and definitely the strong, silent type. He isn't the most affectionate of dragons, sure, not really one for cuddles or sappy emotions, but don't let that fool you into thinking he doesn't care. He's deeply loyal to his family, and though he isn't a loud dragon it doesn't mean he's a coward. He's incredibly stubborn and protective, and content to help others succeed rather than take the limelight for himself.
Likes ✦ Peace and quiet ✦ Being helpful ✦ Those he cares about succeeding ✦ Intelligent people ✦ Water, swimming
Dislikes ✧ Obnoxious younglings ✧ Being forced to fight ✧ Idiots who don't think things through ✧ Huge displays of affection ✧ Walking, running on foot

Mimi watched the twin-headed dragon move back. He was getting slightly bolder since it seemed none of these dragons wanted to eat him or anything like that. Nikulas rubbed Mimi's chin softly, getting a purr from the Terror. It was enough to distract him from the giant dragon coming at them. Nikulas stopped when the Thunderdrum came to a stop and he let Mimi size up the dragon. The terror coward at the sheer size, but sniffed the dragon suspiciously. Nikulas liked the calmness of the dragon, he could almost see himself. He found he would like the dragon, personally, about as much as he would have liked the Nightmare. Not too affectionate, but loyal and strong. He felt he would be a good choice for Mimi, too. He finally got brave enough himself to put the Terror on the ground, Mimi hiding behind his legs at first before he wandered forward timidly, cowering a bit while he studied the giant dragon. That was a huge mouth, and what tiny arms. Mimi darted back to Nikulas and flew back into his arms. Alright, that was enough bravery for once. "I will be sure to visit," Nikulas said. "And yes, I do plan to be a breeder." Not his preferred job choice but whatever he could get. "And of course, professor," he teased, giving a playful but polite smile. That might not have been the best choice but he just couldn't let it up. "I would ask to see a Nadder, but I think I have made my choice between two, if you would like to hear?" It was rather hard. Mimi gave him a look, and a worried whine. But the Terror knew Nikulas had to agree to the choice as well if he was to help Mimi out.

Ha! There! That was definitely a show of confidence, even if it tired the Terror out enough that it scurried away again. It was definitely progress, and with a dragon that would be of some use defensively, as well. Raphael was feeling pretty proud, if he did say so himself. It was good to know the boy would visit, too- they definitely needed more keepers, and he could see this kid in the future caring for the more sensitive dragons. Yes, Mimi and Nik had been a good match, good for both of them, and he had a feeling that the two of them and the Thunderdrum would be a good match too. Maybe. It wasn't for him to say, of course, but he could hope. He had to admit he was a bit surprised by the 'professor'- wait, was this student actually teasing?- but his only response was a smile in return. It was good to have someone comfortable enough with him to do that; he'd been shoved into the role of teacher rather quickly, it really was enough to make him feel old some days. And, bonus, they weren't a total freshman about it! If only everyone in the school was more like this student, then they might actually get somewhere. "I'd be willing to show you the others, of course, but if you have a choice." His Terrors chirped and crooned happily, picking up on his good mood, and Raphael crossed his fingers behind his back, hoping his instincts were right.

Nikulas smiled at the teacher's words. He usually wasn't so open, but he liked this guy. His father was right about one thing, Raphael sure was kind. The old man talked bad about everyone, but he didn't lie, at least. He was relieved to find out his father was right about Raphael, or he would have left Mimi at home in fear the professor would be insensitive about Mimi's needs. Nikulas wanted to love each of his dragons equally and provide them what they needed. Mimi needed a dragon he could get along with and be comfortable around in the event Nikulas had to leave him some place alone, given he would never do that unless there was really no other choice. He looked at Mimi, the Terror shaking in his scales. The dragon did what was silently asked of him, though, and crawled down Nikulas's leg, stepping forward timidly as he looked at each choice that was presented. He kept looking back at Nikulas for comfort, having gotten two feet away without fainting. Nikulas gave a bright smile to him, stirring courage in the little dragon's heart. He moved a little quicker, slowing down when he got close to the dragons than towered above him. He kept away from them, but a few feet, but looked each one over. Before he walked over to the one he chose.
With a small smile, Nikulas caught the flying Terror that shot back to him, trying to hide in his suit jacket from the bigger dragons. "Well then, Raphael," he said, trying out the teacher's name, making sure it was alright to use before he continued. "We will be taking the Thunderdrum. Mimi seems to really like him, and I enjoy his calmness. He'll be beneficial to Mimi. I would love to take them all, but I can't, sadly. I will be sure to visit them all though, so they know I don't dislike them." Mimi settled in Nikulas's arms and gave a happy purr. Safe at last.
